Geeky Star Power…Makeup! Where to Get Your Fave Fandom Makeup

I really love makeup. I won’t suggest I’m a MUA of any kind, nor someone who is even very good at using makeup, but I do enjoy making an attempt. I also love geeky related media though I won’t suggest I love each and every geeky related bit of media, nor am I well-versed in each and every sub-genre, so please don’t come at me.

But you guys aren’t reading this for the backstory, you want to know about geeky plus makeup equals give me the links please.

I’ve split the geeky products and collections into three categories: Available & Tested, Available & Untested, and Difficult to Find. I tried including a description for every product, or collection as well as what they retail for, though companies often have sales. Finally, I’ve included mini-reviews for any products that I have tried for those interested in my geeky makeup thoughts.

AVAILABLE & TESTED

Besame Cosmetics, High End – Mermaid Lagoon Collection retails for $24 – $210

Description: To celebrate the 65th anniversary of Walt Disney’s classic film “Peter Pan,” Bésame has collaborated with Disney to create this collection, inspired by the enchanting, dreamy mermaids of the Neverland Lagoon.

Mini Review: Okay so out of this collection I own the Golden Sand Bronzer, Treasures of the Lagoon eyeshadow palette, and Starfish Pink lipstick. My favorite product out of everything I have is the bronzer which has a nice warm undertone to it and no shimmer. My main gripe with the collection is the lack of colors in the bronzer – there’s only one shade. So nothing for darker skinned folks who want to have this cute Peter Pan inspired compact in their stash.

The concept of the Treasures of the Lagoon eyeshadow palette is cool because all the colors were taken from paint pans from the scene with the mermaids in Peter Pan. Their application isn’t bad, I find myself using the pink and white shimmer shades the most. They’re very soft, but also a bit powdery and work best with a wet brush.

The Starfish Pink lipstick smells like chocolate, goes on really smoothly but transfers. The undertone is a bit cool toned for me so it’s not one of my go-tos for pink lipstick. This color is pink-pink.

The packaging for all of it is really beautiful, you can tell there’s a lot of thought put into the boxes they come in, to the packaging of the products themselves. Durable and beautiful I love good packaging.

Besame Cosmetics, High End – Snow White Collection, retails for $15 – $24

Description: To celebrate the 80th anniversary of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” we have collaborated with Disney to create this exclusive collection, inspired by the original artwork and color palette of this iconic film.

Through extensive and careful research, we have painstakingly hand selected and matched the colors from the original color palette provided by Disney’s Ink and Paint Department to bring you a beautiful and authentic recreation of the colors from the classic 1937 film. Experience the truly timeless and stunning beauty of the original animation in a brand new way.

Mini Review: Unfortunately by the time I saw this collection a majority of the products were already sold out. Though some of the more obscure products can be found on Ebay.

Currently the collection includes: all two lipsticks – One Bite, and Love’s First Kiss – two makeup bags, and a lip balm trio.

I own the lipstick One Bite, and the Keep Singing Eye Shadow Palette. The shadows in the Keep Singing palette are similar to the Treasures of the Lagoon; buttery soft, a bit powdery, and the shimmers are better than the matte shades. I’ve found matte shades in Besame’s products tend to be difficult to blend out, or are muddy, but their shimmers are really beautiful.

There are more usable shades here than in the Treasures of the Lagoon palette, and like with that palette all the colors were taken from paint pots from the original movie.

One Bite also has a chocolate sort of scent to it, and is a pretty deep mauve. It also goes on smoothly but transfers pretty easily.

Her Universe, Indie – Marvel’s Avengers Infinity Stone Lip Glosses, retails for 18.90

Where to Buy: Her Universe, Hot Topic, Amazon

Description: Each of the Infinity Stones is represented by a sparkly color lip gloss in this beautiful set from Her Universe and Marvel. The 6 colors include shimmery pink “Reality Stone,” golden nude “Mind Stone,” jewel tone blue “Space Stone,” emerald green “Time Stone,” bright orange “Soul Stone,” and light purple “Power Stone.” Give your look the power!

Mini-Review: Lip glosses are not something I go out of my way to buy, but the packaging on these was really cool and it was a “treat yo’self” kind of week. I’m glad to say they’re not totally disappointing.

They do transfer, but I don’t know a lip gloss that doesn’t (let me know if you do!). They all contain glitter so be warned if you don’t like a glittery lip gloss. They can be worn on their own or as a topper.

The gold and orange lip glosses I found to sheer to wear on their own. The blue, green, red and purple lip glosses are more visible but still to sheer for me on their own.

However I do love wearing my purple and red glosses as toppers. The red, Reality Stone, gloss looks amazing over my Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip in Creeper. It’s the combination I wore to see Avengers: Endgame, that’s how much I like the way it looks. The gold, Mind Stone, lip gloss I’ve found works to give a nude lip some pop. The orange and blue I haven’t worked out yet. The green I will never use green colors just don’t work on me.

Covergirls Star Wars Collection, retails for 4.99 – 7.49

Where to Buy: Amazon, Walmart

Description: A long time ago, in a galaxy not so far, far away, a movie was made that inspired an epic hairstyle—the Princess Leia. Two trilogies and almost four decades later, we’re still getting beauty inspo from the women of Star Wars. In celebration of the new film The Force Awakens, out this December, CoverGirl is releasing a limited-edition collection of makeup that begs the question: Are you on the light side or the dark side?

Mini-Review: The full collection included six lipsticks in dark purple, gold, red, liliac, silver and nude, three nail polishes (Speed of Light, Red Revenge and Nemesis), and two mascaras in Very Black and Very Black (waterproof).

I’ve used the black mascara and thoroughly disliked it. I found it didn’t do much for my lashes, and the formula was very wet, didn’t dry down completely, and clumpy. The Star Wars quotes on the side were my favorite part of this product. I also own one lipstick from the collection, simply called 70, which is the nude shade. It transfers, has glitter in it, and is more sheer than I expected. I don’t think it’s a bad lipstick, but I think it’ll work more as a topper more than anything.

I think the most disappointing bit of this is how uninspired it feels. The packaging is just okay, there aren’t any names on the lipsticks and other than the mascaras this collection doesn’t scream Star Wars to me. I would love to see a Star Wars eyeshadow palette that really embraces the Jedi and Sith aesthetics.

Maybe when the next Star Wars movie comes out in December. Get on it Disney, we all know you have the money.

Colourpop Disney Designer Collection, retails for 6.00 – 126.00

Where to Buy: Colourpop

Description: The ColourPop x Disney collection includes princesses like Snow White, Cinderella, Ariel, Jasmine, Tiana, and Belle. Products in the line include lipsticks, glosses, single shadows, highlighters, and an eyeshadow palette.

Mini-Review: This collection is HUGE and I don’t have a hundred bucks to just drop like that. I bought the ARIEL collection – includes the ARIEL lipstick, gloss, and eyeshadow – a lipstick in the shade BELLE, and the It’s A Princess Thing shadow palette. The lipsticks are really smooth, satin matte finish, and only transfer moderately. I think BELLE is prettier as a pinkish mauve shade, ARIEL I thought would be more nude on me but it’s to light. The mattes in the shadows are great, they blend out well, and they have a nice pigment. I’m not in love with the shimmers, they’re chunky but they’re workable with a wet brush.

Wonder Woman Brush Set, retails for 95.00

Where to Buy: Luxie

Description: In official partnership with Warner Brothers, the Wonder Woman Face Brush Set was designed for the empowerment of all women and sisters – Amazonian or not – to showcase their beauty in the world of man. Feel powerful, brave and confident using this specially curated beauty set to help you take on the day. Show off your inner Wonder Woman to the world today.

Mini-Review: I love these brushes to hell and back. They’re my go-to brushes and I just feel powerful as hell using them. They look amazing and make me feel like an Amazon using them.

Sailor Moon Brush Set, retails for 12.99 – 14.99

Where to Buy: Amazon

Description: There are eight brushes in total. Each one looks like a miniature version of the wands and scepters any fan would recognize, like the Moon Stick, Star Power Stick, and the Cutie Moon Rod.

Mini-Review: These are brushes you partly buy for The Aesthetic. The blending brush is slightly to big for my eye shape so I like using it clean to blend out the edges of my shadow. The flat brushes are pretty good to apply shadow to your lid. The metal is hefty, so I’m never worrying about these bending or breaking when I travel. Not the best brushes I’ve ever bought but they do work and you can play the Sailor Moon theme song while applying makeup how cool is that?

DoColor Starlight Goddess Brush Set. retails for 16.99 – 24.99

Where to Buy: DoColor, Amazon

Description: Starlight Goddess Brush Set:Meets all your needs with different shapes brushes including powder, foundation, highlighter and blush, contour, concealer, blending, eyebrow, large/small eyeshadow, lip and eyeliner brushes — all housed in a beautiful box.

1 Brush Set for all Looks:With the 4 bigger and the 8 precision brushes makeup lovers from professional to amateur level will be able to do eye shadow, brows, lips, and complexion perfectly, guaranteed vegan and cruelty-free,non-skin irritation, achieves professional and beautiful look

Mini-Review: So technically these aren’t “official” Captain Marvel brushes but, I mean, look at them. They look so close to her colors and symbol I had to include them. Plus they’re way more affordable than the Wonder Woman brushes and work really well. I tend to reach for these more than my Sailor Moon eye brushes, though their bristles are a little rougher. They’re a twelve piece set with face and eye brushes so you can’t really go wrong here.

Ulta Beauty Collect x Marvel’s Avengers, retails for 10.00 – 28.00

Where to Buy: Ebay

Description: Limited Edition collection with Marvel for Avengers: Endgame

Mini-Review: I only bought one matte liquid lipstick in shade I Got This from this collection. The highlighter and shadow palette were sold out. Looks like everything on Ulta’s website is sold out, but you can find a lot of the pieces on Ebay. I Got This isn’t a bad liquid lip, it transfers but not a ton, the biggest draw back is how drying the formula is.

Colourpop Disney Villains Collection, retails for 7.00 – 249.00

Where to Buy: Colourpop

Description: Embrace your wicked side with highlighters, jelly shadows, glitter pastes, lip products, and an eye shadow palette all influenced by the iconic traits of each Disney villain. The line features the same creamy pigments and standout colors ColourPop is known for, plus the brand’s superaffordable pricing.

Mini-Review: So I admit, I was tempted to get the eyeshadow palette, Misunderstood, what stopped me is the palette has more shimmers than mattes. It’d be hard to build a complete look with this palette so I passed. I may go back when I have extra cash since I like the It’s A Princess Thing palette so much. Instead I bought a Jelly Shadow in shade Just Your Voice and a highlighter in shade Mistress of Evil

The Jelly Shadow is…weird. It’s very wet but dries and is wildly pigmented. I would have to use this with an eye primer since my lids get oily. The highlighter is more of a go-to, I like the champagne shade a lot, and the packaging is really well done. It’s a big chunky and very glittery so it’s more of a night out highlighter than an everyday one.

MAC Aladdin Collection, retails for 19.00 – 35.00

Where to Buy: MAC

Description: In celebration of Disney’s Aladdin, M•A•C announces a special-edition, opulently packaged collection created to coincide with the much-anticipated release of this thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic. M•A•C has teamed up with Disney to unveil a sumptuous range of lip, cheek, and eye colors inspired by the beautiful self-determined Jasmine. This exciting new collaboration highlights the strength and beauty of

Jasmine, with a color collection that shows she is confident and strong-willed; inspiring all of us to express ourselves in any way we desire.

Mini-Review: I bought two pieces from this collection, a lipstick in shade Princess Incognito, and the mini 9-pan shadow palette Princess Jasmine. I’ve only used MAC lipsticks before – okay I was given one by a friend they’re expensive! – but never their eye shadows. The shimmer shades in this palette are great, pigmented without falling everywhere. The mattes were not great; muddy, hard to blend, and just overall difficult to work with. Plus for 35 dollars it’s a super tiny palette even if the packaging for the collection is great I’m not sure it’s worth the cost. The lipstick I like better, though I’m not in love with the shade, it goes on smoothly, and doesn’t transfer much. I like to pair it with my Narf Star Jelly to give it some color and moisture.

HipDot x SpongeBob Collection, retails for 18.00 – 120.00

Where to Buy: Hipdot

Description: ARE YOU READY KIDS? AYE-AYE-CAPTAIN! The ENTIRE HipDot x SpongeBob collection is available in this LIMITED EDITION box set that includes: one fifteen shade eyeshadow palette, one Sandy Cheeks blush bronzer, one trio set of three coconut oil and vitamin e lip glosses, and the Best Friends pack of two SpongeBob and two Patrick sheet masks. Only a few of these collector boxes have been made, which are perfect for storing both makeup and Krabby patties.

Mini-Review: Firstly I can’t believe I bought this eyeshadow palette, like goodness. But I did cause I’m a sucker. To me this palette is very “con makeup”. The colors are all taken from the show itself and as such includes a lot of blues, purples, yellows, pinks and reds. Not exactly wearable for the day-to-day though I think you could make a wearable look using the yellows and tans. Maybe even something soft with the pink and tan mattes. So far I like the mattes most, the shimmers I found only work if you use your finger. Which I honestly find annoying, I know that doesn’t bother some people but it bothers me. I tried a dry and wet brush and nothing helped with the shimmers. If anything a wet brush took away the pigment of the shimmers.

I’d label this as an “okay” palette. The colors are pretty, I played around with the yellows and made a cute look. I wish there was a matte blue in here instead of all blue shimmers. I just wish the shimmers were actually workable, they’re very dry and chunky. There’s no scene though, and I only had minor fallout with one of the blues. Haven’t tried any of the other products in the collection and I’ll honestly pass on doing so given the price and how the shadow palette was just okay.

DIFFICULT TO FIND

Besame Cosmetics, Snow White Collection

Originally there was two eyeshadow palettes: With a Smile and a Song, and Keep Singing along with an eyeshadow The 1937 Storybook Palette. The latter was a book palette that looked like the old school fairytale books that appeared at the beginning of Disney movies. Aka freaking beautiful!

The Snow White collection also included: a vanity mirror, cream rouge blush, a translucent powder compact, and a seven dwarfs inspired mini-lipstick set.

I was able to find some of the products on Ebay, mainly the two eyeshadow palettes, Keep Singing and With a Smile and A Song. I also was able to find the Seven Dwarfs mini-lipstick collection on Mod Cloth.

Besame Cosmetics, Agent Carter Collection

Description: We are overjoyed to introduce our 1946 Agent Carter collection. This labor of love was sparked by Marvel’s use of our popular shade, 1946 Red Velvet, on the iconic Agent Carter. Peggy’s fierce independence, glamour, and intelligence — as well as our love for the series — inspired us to create a collection dedicated to the show.

Each item has been beautifully crafted to not only appeal to the glamour of the 1940s, but also aid agents of the SSR as they are sent on their missions. The shades, and products, are true to the period and beautifully wearable for any occasion.

Mini-Review: I’m so sad to put under the Difficult to Find list but it’s the truth. Originally the collection included: a translucent powder, a lipstick, and an eyeshadow palette. Out of this collection I own two of the three products, the translucent powder, and the eyeshadow palette.

The translucent powder is one of my go-toes for my makeup, I typically use it to set and brighten under my eyes. The eyeshadow palette less so. Like every Besame product I’ve ever gotten the packaging is to die for, with a faux leather feel to the passport design. It looks like an actual passport which makes it a great collectors piece. The shadows I’ve found don’t have a whole lot of pigment – especially the shimmers, the mattes are better – and can be a bit patchy and dry. They’re workable, but not my favorite shadows to use.

The only product I don’t own from this collection is the lipstick which is a huge bummer. However I was able to find the whole collection and just the eyeshadow palette on Ebay

Equipped with our color palettes you can conquer all worlds, one color at a time!

GeekChic Cosmetics, retails for 4.00 – 76.00

Description: We make cosmetics based on fun, geeky stuff. So many people are afraid to get into wearing makeup, or just disinterested, because of the difficulty, cost, and/or skill perceived to be required to use them. And that’s a damn shame. We make cosmetics that, we think, get people who are like us excited… because makeup should be fun.

When we were forming the ideas behind Geek Chic Cosmetics, we noticed a ton of places catering to the geek crowd, but very few specialized in stuff mostly for ladies or dudes who like cosmetics, no judgement here (who doesn’t want to smell and look awesome?).

Mini-Review: So I tried the Hannibal eye shadow collection in samples they had a couple years ago and honestly, didn’t like them. Maybe because the samples come in clam shell packaging which are impossible to open without spilling  your eyeshadow everywhere. Maybe because I just don’t like loose shadows. Maybe because there were next to no matte shades and by the end of it all my counter was covered in glittery shadow.

I will say, however, the shadows were pretty pigmented and the consistency felt smooth. They have a wide range of geeky fandoms to choose from – Sailor Moon, Cowboy Bebop to name a few. They were just difficult to work with – for me. If you like loose shadows at a cheap price these could work for you.

I also purchased two lip products, a Joystick (shimmer/metallic lipstick) in shade Curiosity for Crime, and a Star Jelly (shimmer lip gloss) in shade Narf. The Joystick I don’t find myself reaching for since it’s not a color I would wear on the daily, and it doesn’t go on very smoothly. That said it smells amazing, and doesn’t make my lips feel dry. The Star Jelly is what I use most often, I like pairing it over a nude lip and it smells like root bear.

It’s interesting to observe, as someone who mainly buys geeky related makeup, to see how many more companies are realizing “hey people who like makeup also like Marvel/DC/Star Trek/etc”. They’re seeing a growing sub-audience of consumers and are beginning to make more products for those consumers. Both on the high end scale, the drugstore scale, and the indie brands that have been leading the charge for years.

If you know a geeky makeup brand or collection hit me up and I’ll check them out!
